Abu Dhabi International Airport to be Renamed Sheikh Zayed Airport

On Tuesday, just one day before the much-anticipated opening of Terminal A at Abu Dhabi International Airport, UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued directives for a significant transformation—the airport is to be renamed. Wego’s report unveiled this official announcement.

Effective from 9 February 2024, coinciding with the official inauguration of the new Terminal A, the airport will assume its new official name, Zayed International Airport. This strategic move aligns with the emirate’s commitment to evolution in the aviation sector.

Terminal A, formerly recognized as the Midfield Terminal during its construction phase, is not just a symbolic change but a monumental leap in capacity. Designed to handle up to 45 million passengers annually, the terminal is set to facilitate flights to 117 destinations worldwide. Commencing operations on 1 November 2023, Terminal A is poised to mark a historic increase in passenger capacity, further solidifying Abu Dhabi’s standing as a global aviation hub. The renaming reflects a tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the United Arab Emirates.
